Optimizing Pavement Performance with Geogrids:  Best Practices and Common Pitfalls

This presentation will explore the critical role of geogrids in pavement optimization and subgrade stabilization, offering practical insights for both seasoned professionals and those new to the field. We will delve into key installation recommendations, discussing the importance of interlock (aggregate strikethrough) and confinement as well as common construction methods and practices. Additionally, we will address common installation mistakes:  such as improper overlap, how to address geogrid “waves” properly, improper aggregate placement, handling trench cuts/repairs, etc., providing guidance on how to identify and correct these errors in the field. By the end of this session, attendees will be equipped with the knowledge to enhance the durability and longevity of pavement structures through optimal geogrid installation practices.

Mr. Wiatrek is a 1999 Civil Engineering graduate of Texas A&M University and is a licensed professional engineer in the state of Texas.  He joined Tensar, A Division of CMC in December of 2012 as a Regional Manager out of Driftwood, TX and was promoted to Senior Regional Manager in February 2020.  Prior to working for Tensar, he held a brief role at Oldcastle as a Commercial Hardscapes Consultant for the central Texas area and worked for Contech Engineered Solutions for 12 years prior holding roles of Regional Sales Engineer and Project Consultant in the central Texas area.  Mr. Wiatrek is currently responsible for Tensar’s roadway and walls/slopes geosynthetic business in central and south Texas, which includes InterAx™ and H-Series™ geogrids, TriAx® (TX) geogrid, biaxial (BX) geogrid, and uniaxial (UX) geogrid products.  He has 20+ years of hands on project experience in the central and south Texas area as a technical expert and trusted advisor for numerous engineered products and solutions, including geosynthetic products utilized in pavements.
